Bl. Haseka (Hazeka)
For thirty-six years, Haseka lived in solitude as an anchoress in a cell adjoining a church near Sichem (Sittichenbach), Germany. She exhibited great simplicity and patience, living upon whatever food was donated to her. On one occasion, she received butter that had already spoiled from its age. She placed it in a chest within her cell, where it aged further, giving off such a strong stench that a consecrated woman named Berta who was accustomed to assist Haseka could no longer tolerate the odor. Haseka thereupon knelt and prayed, “Lord, this butter, regardless of what kind it is, we shall consume in your name. All things have been put in your power; in your power and strength you produce good from evil, when you will; if you will, you shall also be able to make this butter good.” When the butter was taken out of the chest, the odor was gone, and it was again as fresh as the day it was first made. Haseka and Berta ate it with delight. Haseka was elderly when she died, but when many days after her death her body was exhumed, her face was found to be incorrupt and youthful.
