St. Genesius
Patron of actors
3rd. century. During a stage performance before Emperor Diocletian in Rome, the actor Genesius portrayed a catechumen about to be baptized in a play satirizing the Christian sacrament. In the midst of the ceremony he was suddenly converted to Christianity. When presented to the Emperor, he declared his Christianity. Enbraged, Diocletian had him turned over to Plautian, prefect of the praetorium, who tortured him in an effort to force him to sacrifice to the pagan gods. When Genesius persisted in his faith, he was beheaded. Though the legend is an ancient one, it is no more than that. Genesius is the patron of actors. Feast day is Aug. 25.

The Acts of St. Genesius claims that the story that it contains is true. A number of leading historians believe that this claim is correct and that the Acts include (at the very least) the nucleus of an historical account. Several indicate that they take the account as a whole as authentic. See THE HISTORY OF WORLD THEATER VOL.I, pg.209; author Margot Berthold retells Genesius as historical fact.
But "Catholic Online; Saints & Angels" (www.catholic.org) says: "When Genesius persisted in his faith, he was beheaded. Though the legend is an ancient one, it is no more than that."
This seems really condescending and flies in the face of secular historians!! Is there anything we can do to correct this situation at www.catholic.org?
Is there anything that I can do to help? I can supply other historians who accept the Acts, if that will help.
