St. Lazarus

St. Lazarus

St. Lazarus

Feastday: June 21

Lazarus is the poor man at the gate of the rich man in Christ's parable related in Luke. (Luke 16:19-31) His name was perpetuated in the Middle Ages by such words as Lazaretto (hospital), Lazarone (a beggar in the street), and the Order of St. Lazarus, which though a military order, had as one of its objectives, the care of lepers. His feast day is June 21st.

This is St. Lazarus the Leper. Christ saw him on the streets and stopped to wash his feet and simultaneously healed him of leprosy. He's venerated by many because he is considered to be a healer.

He is also identified as yoruma in the santeria religion. However many other saints and virgins are identified by African names in this religion. It is NOT a fake saint.

His feast day isn't June 21st, though. Western Catholics celebrate it on December 17 and Eastern Orthodox the Saturday before Easter.

Actually, the image of St. Lazarus shown here with the dogs was venerated in the Catholic Church during the Middle Ages. A military and hospitaller order of St. Lazarus was established during that time for the care of lepers and had the beggar St. Lazarus as its patron,Some churches in Spain dating from the Middle Ages even have images of this Lazarus to this day, There's one in Palencia,Spain. His story from the Rich Man and Lazarus narrative in St.Luke's Gospel is considered to be a parable by the Catholic Church in modern times but this wasn't the case centuries ago. Some theologians debate whether the story was in fact a parable. If so,it is the ONLY parable in which Jesus mentions a person by name:LAZARUS. Some of the Orthodox Christian Churches, among them the Copic Orthodox Church honors this St. Lazarus along with the Lazarus that Jesus rose from the dead as saints. They are of course, two different persons. In Santería,St. Lazarus the beggar is identified with the Yoruba deity,Babalu-Ayé. To say that this St, Lazarus is a "made up" saint is really misinformed. He is a person who is probably in heaven now and a saint if the so called parable in St.Luke's Gospel chapter 16 verses 19-31 isn't a parable a all but a true event which occurred. I happen to think it did occur because Jesus named him by name.I'm Cuban,I've been in Miami several times and I'm familiar with the Santeria situation there. Santeros identify other Catholic saints with Yoruba African deities also, among them St.Barbara as Changó,Our Lady of Charity as Ochún,St.Francis of Assisi as Orula, and so on.I know a lot of Cubans that aren't Santeros and they honor St. Lazarus the beggar, the one with the dogs mentioned here and attribute to his intercession many miracles.

this is not a real saint named by the Catholic Church. You are misinforming people. This is in fact a made up saint by santeros (satanic cult) from Cuba. Everyone who is from Cuba or has lived in Miami knows this.

Is this a saint proclaimend by the catholic faith in reality??? as far as I know this saint is pretty much venerated in Cuba because of the syncretism with the yoruba-santeria religion. But the actual saint proclaimed by catholic faith is Saint Lazarus the Bishop. Am I right???
